إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ١
When that which is coming arrives
Surah 56 · 96 Ayahs
Al-Waqi'ah
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy
- لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ٢
no one will be able to deny it has come
- خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌ٣
bringing low and raising high
- إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا٤
When the earth is shaken violently
- وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا٥
and the mountains are ground to powder
- فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا٦
and turn to scattered dust
- وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً٧
then you will be sorted into three classes
- فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ٨
Those on the Right––what people they are
- وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ٩
Those on the Left––what people they are
- وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ١٠
And those in front––ahead indeed
- أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ١١
For these will be the ones brought nearest to God
- فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ١٢
in Gardens of Bliss
- ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ١٣
many from the past
- وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ١٤
and a few from later generations
- عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍ١٥
On couches of well-woven cloth
- مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ١٦
they will sit facing each other
- يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُخَلَّدُونَ١٧
everlasting youths will go round among them
- بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ١٨
with glasses, flagons, and cups of a pure drink
- لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُونَ١٩
that causes no headache or intoxication
- وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ٢٠
[there will be] any fruit they choose
- وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ٢١
the meat of any bird they like
- وَحُورٌ عِينٌ٢٢
and beautiful companions
- كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ٢٣
like hidden pearls
- جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ٢٤
a reward for what they used to do
- لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا٢٥
They will hear no idle or sinful talk there
- إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا٢٦
only clean and wholesome speech
- وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ٢٧
Those on the Right, what people they are
- فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ٢٨
They will dwell amid thornless lote trees
- وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍ٢٩
and clustered acacia
- وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍ٣٠
with spreading shade
- وَمَاءٍ مَسْكُوبٍ٣١
constantly flowing water
- وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ٣٢
abundant fruits
- لَا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ٣٣
unfailing, unforbidden
- وَفُرُشٍ مَرْفُوعَةٍ٣٤
with incomparable companions
- إِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنْشَاءً٣٥
We have specially created––
- فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا٣٦
virginal
- عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا٣٧
loving, of matching age––
- لِأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ٣٨
for those on the Right
- ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ٣٩
many from the past
- وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ٤٠
and many from later generations
- وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ٤١
But those on the Left, what people they are
- فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ٤٢
They will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water
- وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍ٤٣
in the shadow of black smoke
- لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ٤٤
neither cool nor refreshing
- إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ٤٥
Before, they overindulged in luxury
- وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيمِ٤٦
and persisted in great sin
- وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ٤٧
always saying, ‘What? When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up
- أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ٤٨
And our earliest forefathers too?’
- قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ٤٩
Say [Prophet], ‘The earliest and latest generations
- لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ٥٠
will all be gathered on a predetermined Day
- ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ٥١
and you who have gone astray and denied the truth
- لَآكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُّومٍ٥٢
will eat from the bitter tree of Zaqqum
- فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ٥٣
filling your bellies with it
- فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ٥٤
and drink scalding water
- فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ٥٥
lapping it like thirsty camels.’
- هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ٥٦
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement
- نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ٥٧
It was We who created you: will you not believe
- أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تُمْنُونَ٥٨
Consider [the semen] you eject
- أَأَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ٥٩
do you create it yourselves or are We the Creator
- نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ٦٠
We ordained death to be among you. Nothing could stop Us
- عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ٦١
if We intended to change you and recreate you in a way unknown to you
- وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ٦٢
You have learned how you were first created: will you not reflect
- أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تَحْرُثُونَ٦٣
Consider the seeds you sow in the ground
- أَأَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ٦٤
is it you who make them grow or We
- لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ٦٥
If We wished, We could turn your harvest into chaff and leave you to wail
- إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ٦٦
‘We are burdened with debt
- بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ٦٧
we are bereft.’
- أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ٦٨
Consider the water you drink
- أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ٦٩
was it you who brought it down from the rain-cloud or We
- لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ٧٠
If We wanted, We could make it bitter: will you not be thankful
- أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ٧١
Consider the fire you kindle
- أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِئُونَ٧٢
is it you who make the wood for it grow or We
- نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِلْمُقْوِينَ٧٣
We made it a reminder, and useful to those who kindle it
- فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ٧٤
so [Prophet] glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme
- ۞ فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ٧٥
I swear by the positions of the stars
- وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ٧٦
a mighty oath, if you only knew
- إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ٧٧
that this is truly a noble Quran
- فِي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُونٍ٧٨
in a protected Record
- لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ٧٩
that only the purified can touch
- تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ٨٠
sent down from the Lord of all being
- أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ٨١
How can you scorn this statement
- وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ٨٢
And how, in return for the livelihood you are given, can you deny it
- فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ٨٣
When the soul of a dying man comes up to his throat
- وَأَنْتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَ٨٤
while you gaze on
- وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ٨٥
We are nearer to him than you, though you do not see Us
- فَلَوْلَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ٨٦
why, if you are not to be judged
- تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ٨٧
do you not restore his soul to him, if what you say is true
- فَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ٨٨
If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to God
- فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ٨٩
he will have rest, ease, and a Garden of Bliss
- وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ٩٠
if he is one of those on the Right
- فَسَلَامٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ٩١
[he will hear], ‘Peace be on you,’ from his companions on the Right
- وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ٩٢
but if he is one of those who denied the truth and went astray
- فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ٩٣
he will be welcomed with scalding water
- وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ٩٤
He will burn in Hell
- إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ٩٥
This is the certain truth
- فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ٩٦
[Prophet], glorify the name of your Lord the Supreme
