عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ١

Surah 78 · 40 Ayahs
An-Naba
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy
- عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ٢
The momentous announcement
- الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ٣
about which they differ
- كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ٤
They will find out
- ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ٥
In the end they will find out
- أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا٦
Did We not make the earth smooth
- وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا٧
and make the mountains to keep it stable
- وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا٨
Did We not create you in pairs
- وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا٩
give you sleep for rest
- وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا١٠
the night as a cover
- وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا١١
and the day for your livelihood
- وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا١٢
Did We not build seven strong [heavens] above you
- وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا١٣
and make a blazing lamp
- وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا١٤
Did We not send water pouring down from the clouds
- لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا١٥
to bring forth with it grain, plants
- وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا١٦
and luxuriant gardens
- إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا١٧
A time has been appointed for the Day of Decision
- يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا١٨
a Day when the Trumpet will sound and you will come forward in crowds
- وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا١٩
when the sky will open up like wide portals
- وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا٢٠
when the mountains will vanish like a mirage
- إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا٢١
Hell lies in wait
- لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا٢٢
a home for oppressors
- لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا٢٣
to stay in for a long, long time
- لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا٢٤
where they will taste no coolness nor drink
- إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا٢٥
except one that is scalding and dark––
- جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا٢٦
a fitting requital
- إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا٢٧
for they did not fear a reckoning
- وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا٢٨
and they rejected Our messages as lies
- وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا٢٩
We have recorded everything in a Record
- فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا٣٠
‘Taste this: all you will get from Us is more torment.’
- إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا٣١
For those who were aware of God there is supreme fulfilment
- حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا٣٢
private gardens, vineyards
- وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا٣٣
nubile, well-matched companions
- وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا٣٤
and an overflowing cup
- لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا٣٥
There they will hear no vain or lying talk
- جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا٣٦
a reward from your Lord, a fitting gift
- رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا٣٧
from the Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between, the Lord of Mercy. They will have no authority from Him to speak
- يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا٣٨
On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, they will not speak except for those to whom the Lord of Mercy gives permission, who will say only what is right
- ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا٣٩
That is the Day of Truth. So whoever wishes to do so should take the path that leads to his Lord
- إِنَّا أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا٤٠
We have warned you of imminent torment, on the Day when every person will see what their own hands have sent ahead for them, when the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I were dust!’
