Surah 78 · 40 Ayahs

An-Naba

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy

  1. عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ١

    What are they asking about

  2. عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ٢

    The momentous announcement

  3. الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ٣

    about which they differ

  4. كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ٤

    They will find out

  5. ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ٥

    In the end they will find out

  6. أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا٦

    Did We not make the earth smooth

  7. وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا٧

    and make the mountains to keep it stable

  8. وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا٨

    Did We not create you in pairs

  9. وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا٩

    give you sleep for rest

  10. وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا١٠

    the night as a cover

  11. وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا١١

    and the day for your livelihood

  12. وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا١٢

    Did We not build seven strong [heavens] above you

  13. وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا١٣

    and make a blazing lamp

  14. وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا١٤

    Did We not send water pouring down from the clouds

  15. لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا١٥

    to bring forth with it grain, plants

  16. وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا١٦

    and luxuriant gardens

  17. إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا١٧

    A time has been appointed for the Day of Decision

  18. يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا١٨

    a Day when the Trumpet will sound and you will come forward in crowds

  19. وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا١٩

    when the sky will open up like wide portals

  20. وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا٢٠

    when the mountains will vanish like a mirage

  21. إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا٢١

    Hell lies in wait

  22. لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا٢٢

    a home for oppressors

  23. لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا٢٣

    to stay in for a long, long time

  24. لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا٢٤

    where they will taste no coolness nor drink

  25. إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا٢٥

    except one that is scalding and dark––

  26. جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا٢٦

    a fitting requital

  27. إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا٢٧

    for they did not fear a reckoning

  28. وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا٢٨

    and they rejected Our messages as lies

  29. وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا٢٩

    We have recorded everything in a Record

  30. فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا٣٠

    ‘Taste this: all you will get from Us is more torment.’

  31. إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا٣١

    For those who were aware of God there is supreme fulfilment

  32. حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا٣٢

    private gardens, vineyards

  33. وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا٣٣

    nubile, well-matched companions

  34. وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا٣٤

    and an overflowing cup

  35. لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا٣٥

    There they will hear no vain or lying talk

  36. جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا٣٦

    a reward from your Lord, a fitting gift

  37. رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا٣٧

    from the Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between, the Lord of Mercy. They will have no authority from Him to speak

  38. يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا٣٨

    On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, they will not speak except for those to whom the Lord of Mercy gives permission, who will say only what is right

  39. ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا٣٩

    That is the Day of Truth. So whoever wishes to do so should take the path that leads to his Lord

  40. إِنَّا أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا٤٠

    We have warned you of imminent torment, on the Day when every person will see what their own hands have sent ahead for them, when the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I were dust!’
