Surah 80 · 42 Ayahs

'Abasa

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy

  1. عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ١

    He frowned and turned away

  2. أَنْ جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ٢

    when the blind man came to him––

  3. وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ٣

    for all you know, he might have grown in spirit

  4. أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ٤

    or taken note of something useful to him

  5. أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ٥

    For the self-satisfied one

  6. فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ٦

    you go out of your way––

  7. وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ٧

    though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––

  8. وَأَمَّا مَنْ جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ٨

    but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness

  9. وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ٩

    and awe

  10. فَأَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ١٠

    you allow yourself to be distracted

  11. كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ١١

    No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson

  12. فَمَنْ شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ١٢

    from which those who wish to be taught should learn

  13. فِي صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ١٣

    [written] on honoured

  14. مَرْفُوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ١٤

    exalted, pure pages

  15. بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ١٥

    by the hands of

  16. كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ١٦

    noble and virtuous scribes

  17. قُتِلَ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ١٧

    Woe to man! How ungrateful he is

  18. مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ١٨

    From what thing does God create him

  19. مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ١٩

    He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him

  20. ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ٢٠

    He makes the way easy for him

  21. ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ٢١

    then He causes him to die and be buried

  22. ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنْشَرَهُ٢٢

    When He wills, He will raise him up again

  23. كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ٢٣

    Yet mandoes not fulfil God’s commands

  24. فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْإِنْسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ٢٤

    Let man consider the food he eats

  25. أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا٢٥

    We pour down abundant water

  26. ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا٢٦

    and cause the soil to split open

  27. فَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا٢٧

    We make grain grow

  28. وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا٢٨

    and vines, fresh vegetation

  29. وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا٢٩

    olive trees, date palms

  30. وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا٣٠

    luscious gardens

  31. وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا٣١

    fruits, and fodder

  32. مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ٣٢

    all for you and your livestock to enjoy

  33. فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ٣٣

    When the Deafening Blast comes––

  34. يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ٣٤

    the Day man will flee from his own brother

  35. وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ٣٥

    his mother, his father

  36. وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ٣٦

    his wife, his children

  37. لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ٣٧

    each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day

  38. وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُسْفِرَةٌ٣٨

    on that Day some faces will be beaming

  39. ضَاحِكَةٌ مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌ٣٩

    laughing, and rejoicing

  40. وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ٤٠

    but some faces will be dust-stained

  41. تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ٤١

    and covered in darkness

  42. أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ٤٢

    those are the disbelievers, the licentious
